Apple 15 Pro Max Review: Love at First Zoom
These phones, along with the iPhone 15 and 15 Plus and new Apple Watches, are now available in stores. I tested the iPhone 15 Pro and 15 Pro Max for five days, but it was not until I was taking pictures of a bodega cat named Kit Kat that I realized just how many improvements these phones have. They are brimming with features. After taking Kit Kat’s picture, I noticed that I could turn his image into a portrait mode photo. It is a small detail, but one that has major implications: almost any photo can now be a portrait.
With a lighter build, a new shortcut button, and the world’s smallest processor, Apple gave its Pro models a facelift, all the while maintaining that iconic iPhone aesthetic. During my review of both phones, I took videos of penguins swimming, played Resident Evil Village on the 15 Pro, tested out the new zoom lens on the 15 Pro Max while perched atop a Ferris wheel in San Francisco, and, you know, forgot to plug a Lightning cable into the new USB-C port.
The 15 Pro Max’s refinements are what set them apart from previous models. These phones are among the most compelling to come out of Apple in years, but they come at a price: the 15 Pro costs $999 (£999, AU$1,849), the same as the 2017 iPhone X, but the 15 Pro Max’s entry-level price is $100 more than it was the previous year. Apple eliminated the 128GB storage option, leaving the $1,199 model with 256GB of storage as the new standard, and that is exactly the same price as Samsung’s Galaxy S23 Ultra.
The design of the iPhone 15 Pro design embraces titanium and USB-C
With its ever-so-slightly rounded edges, the new titanium body is lovely, light, and comfortable to hold; it feels less bulky than the straight-edged 12, 13, and 14 series. In fact, the 15 Pro and 15 Pro Max almost seem to be Apple’s attempt to find a Goldilocks-style middle ground by combining the blocky sides of recent years with the curved sides of the X, XS, and 11 families. That being said, most people will probably put a case on the phone and not notice these changes at all.
Two other major modifications to the body are as follows: First, the USB-C port has replaced the Lightning port found on earlier models; this change garnered attention even before Apple made the announcement, but it is not that drastic. iPhone 15 Pro Max’s 5x zoom
first of all, let me emphasize that the zoom lens on the lesser Pro is not the same as the one on the larger Pro Max. The 15 Pro Max features a new 5x telephoto camera that is made using many prisms and clever engineering, while the 15 Pro has the same tried-and-true 3x telephoto camera as previous generations.
Apple’s design has the advantage that the lens takes up much less space and allows the image sensor to sit parallel with the lens, eliminating the restriction of having a telephoto image sensor that is limited in size by the thickness of the phone. In contrast, there are a number of Android phones with periscope-style telephoto lenses that use a single prism to bounce light to the sensor, like the 10x zoom on the Samsung Galaxy S23 Ultra.
The larger 48-megapixel sensor on the main camera of both Pro phones also helps with low light performance; after dusk, I noticed that the iPhone 15 Pro Max needed less night mode than the iPhone 14 Pro Max, and the photonic engine—Apple’s fancy-pants term for photo processing—seems to help with highlights more.
The iPhone 15 Pro is the next gaming console
The new A17 Pro chip powers the 15 Pro and 15 Pro Max. If anything, video games—and not just Candy Crush—are the best way to showcase the 15 Pro and 15 Pro Max’s processing and graphics performance. Resident Evil Village, which I got to test—or at least the first part of it—looks amazing on the 15 Pro Max’s screen, especially in terms of lighting and shading. It speaks volumes that games like this can come to the iPhone.
